New on Sports Illustrated: Weston McKennie Is Fighting for Something Bigger

Image
Proving he belongs at Juventus is just part of McKennie's mission. His experience with racism has shaped who he is and what he wants to become. It was another day among hundreds that Weston McKennie spent on a soccer field. This particular field was unlike the majority since it was in a foreign country and surrounded by fans, but it was still familiar turf. The habits, instincts and reflexes that had been forged over a lifetime in the game probably kicked in as soon as he smelled the grass. The pitch was a place of structure and comfort—a place where he could focus on what he loved to do. McKennie had recently returned to active duty after his summer break and entered as a second-half substitute in Schalke 04’s five-goal, DFB-Pokal rout of host SV Drochtersen/Assel, a team from Germany’s fourth tier. It was an early-August waltz for the Bundesliga club and a nice way for its young U.S. star to get his feet wet ahead of the 2019–20 season. Being on the field, in his element and a

New on Sports Illustrated: Brett Favre Says Fans Don't Want Politics Mixed With Sports, Endorses Presidential Candidate: TRAINA THOUGHTS

Image
Brett Favre shows you "stick to sports" means "talk politics if you agree with me." 1 . Hypocrisy: the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense. Hello, Brett Favre. The Hall of Fame quarterback  said this to Donald Trump eight days ago : “The NBA and the NFL are struggling with lower ratings, as fans clearly do not want political messaging mixed with their sports.” Clearly, the irony of an athlete saying politics and sports shouldn't mix while said athlete is publicly speaking to the president of the United States was lost on Favre. And now, eight days after Favre declared fans don't want sports and politics to mix, he tweeted this:  First things first. If you read Traina Thoughts regularly, you know almost every sport is struggling with lower ratings . The MLB and NHL are coming off the lowest-rated World Series and Stanley Cup ever. And while NFL ratings are down slightly,

New on Sports Illustrated: What Was Behind Rays' Disastrous Game 6? A Lack of Trust

Image
In one isolated moment, Kevin Cash did not trust a left-hander against Mookie Betts, when the numbers suggested he should. On the eve of World Series Game 1, I held a conversation with Rays GM Erik Neander about how to interpret sample size in a pandemic season. The subject: Mookie Betts vs. left-handed pitchers. I never thought the World Series would swing on that conversation. The Braves during the NLCS had made me aware of Betts’ weakness against left-handed pitchers. “The Dodgers are interesting because they have a lot of right-handed hitters who are better against right-handed pitching,” Atlanta bench coach Walt Weiss said. “Have you looked at Betts’s numbers? He’s one of the worst hitters in the league against left-handed pitching.” Sure enough, Betts had the worst slugging percentage against left-handed pitchers of any hitter in the majors in 2020 (.218, minimum 50 at-bats). He confirmed his weakness in the NLCS, going 1-for-13 against Atlanta left-handers. On the workout

New on Sports Illustrated: Moise Kean Forces His Way Into PSG's Plans

With Neymar injured and Mauro Icardi out of form, Kean has taken advantage of playing time with PSG and seems poised to contribute in a big way. PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain fans could be seeing a lot of Moise Kean in the next few weeks, especially with Neymar injured and Mauro Icardi out of form. Kean has quickly justified PSG’s decision to sign him on a season-long from Everton with four goals in two games, including both in Wednesday’s 2-0 win at Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League . That clinical performance as a substitute may well have earned him a starting place for Saturday’s trip to Nantes. A win would give PSG a seventh straight league win and pressure Lille ahead of the northern side’s home game against improving Lyon on Sunday. PSG and Lille are level on points after eight rounds. With PSG up against it against Basaksehir, the 20-year-old Kean came off the bench to show the kind of cool finishing which thrust him into the spotlight as a teen with Italian c
